Your LEARNING Journey

Here's what you need to know about anything that you want to learn.

It is called the Guaranteed Success Formula, and there are four steps:

  1. Study / Make Corrections

  2. Take Action

  3. Get Feedback

  4. Repeat and NEVER GIVE UP

HINT:  Make sure you have taken enough action to get enough feedback before you consider making corrections and changing your destination plan.

FOUR PHASES OF LEARNING

For each thing you want to learn, there are four phases of the learning journey:

1) Unconscious Incompetence

You don't know what you don't know how to do.

2) Conscious Incompetence

You know that you don't know what to do and how to do it.

3) Conscious Competence

You learn and practice getting good at it through study, effort and discipline.

4) Unconscious Competence

You are good at it without trying.

THREE STEPS FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK.

As you are learning, you will take three steps forward, and two steps back, and in the process, you'll discover what you didn't know.

This should be considered a tremendous "win" because not only do you have a "net gain" of a step forward, but you have also learned what you need to learn to take the next step forward.

(It is at this point that most unsuccessful people see the two steps back in a disempowering way. They see them as failures rather than as discoveries of what to learn, and then they quit.)

ENJOY THE STUMBLE

Make falling down fun.  Play with it. Lighten up.  And most importantly, learn to fall forward!  If you fall down, don't stay down.  Pick yourself up and dust yourself off as quickly as possible.

Understanding that this is normal and natural, putting all your attention on the net gain and what you've learned, and then using that to moving forward.

WHAT TO DO

Whenever you have a setback, rather than taking it personally, ask yourself these three questions:

1) What worked?

2) What didn't work?

3) How can I make it better?

Learn from your mistakes. Learn from your experiences (both good and bad).  Focus on what Tony Robbins calls CANI - "Continuous and Never-ending Improvement"

ACCELERATING YOUR JOURNEY

You can accelerate you journey and make it more fun by making BOTH the stepping forward and the stepping backward conscious, anticipating them and planning for them.

Make the two steps back (learning) just as "planned" as the initial three steps forward.  Anticipate them, plan for them, and schedule time for them.

This will help you see them as part of the journey, and to treat setbacks as an absolute win, as another step you are taking toward your goals.

TEACHING OTHERS

After you've developed a basic level of understanding or proficiency at a certain skill, you can take that to the next level by teaching others what you have learned.

This will help you master your knowledge and skill by seeing it from many different points of view.
